I'm sure you feel
like Sisyphus these days
pushing that boulder up
your enormous mountain
only to have it roll back on you
just before you crest the top
and I'm sure you wonder
as you start back up
what crimes you committed
to deserve such a fate
I don't know the answer
but what I do know is
it would be so much easier on you and the rest of us, watching you
if you'd let us help you
shoulder your burden
because if you don't
you are going to be pushing
your boulder up that mountain
for a very long time
A Sisyphean task is one that requires continual effort that never quite pays off. This is named for Sisyphus, who paid eternally for his crimes by rolling a boulder uphill. Every time it reached the top, it rolled back down again and Sisyphus was compelled to start anew.
