I admit to being a vampire fan but so much of the stuff now written is an ann-rice stlye cliche these days. I have a very short peice of Vamp fiction on my portfolio and although it does use some cliche's just to move the piece along. One of the better vamp pieces I've read was Lost souls by Poppy Z brite. her vamps aren't into hanging around looking like refugees from the 18th century or hunting werewolfs as in underworld, they're trash who survive by being a little nastier than other trash! ok, she steals the rock star idea from lestat but it works in the context of the novel.
I think where most vamp fiction falls down these days is in trying to explaint he origin of vampires, why bother, why not just have them as an evolutionary cock up?
