I Am Plain

I am plain.
Always have been,
Always will be.
If you were in a crowd
And I was in that crowd
You would not notice me.

However, if
You were in a theatre
Watching a certain play
And I was in that play
You couldn't keep your eyes off me.

It is my escape,
The ultimate escape.
Where the lines of reality
Are erased for three short hours.
Where I soar as
"A force of nature."
Where I'm proclaimed
"A warm and quiet beauty."
Where I
"Command the light and the audience,"
"Taking them on a wonderous ride."

But when the last curtain falls,
And the ghost light comes on,
And the costumes are put away,
And the make-up is removed
You would not notice me.
I am plain.
But inside me burns the fire of Melpomene.
