Spring 2006 SLAM! - Congrats to the winners - see you all next time! |
"Invalid Item" I want a fresh start; this is what I tell myself As I stand in front of a towering office block. Buffeted by people hurrying past, At a similar frequency to the cars. An endless stream of sound. Amusement bubbles inside as I compare, those to the cattle back on the farm. Shivering slightly, the buildings shade me Funnelling a cool wind down the avenue. Glancing down at the address card, I blanch. Floor 40, I realise fully now, that I won’t be able to take the stairs. Entering, I repeat to myself again, I want this fresh start. Pushing the button for the elevator, With a metallic taste of fear, I bravely enter. Selecting the floor number, I edge back into a corner, gripping the cold rail. Jerking upwards, I lurch against the side. At the 10th floor, I have to stop it. How can I do this every day? Floor 40 was reached in 4 stops. Taking a deep breath, I try to look composed. As the door opens smoothly. I emerge on shaky legs. Smiling relieved at the receptionist, Who directs me towards a chair. This pause is the best thing yet. Returning to the bustling pavement, My knees still shaking a little. I contemplate relief at my failure. A better idea would have been, For me to try for a job In the quiet outer suburbs first. It will still be a fresh start. ** Images For Use By Upgraded+ Only ** |
