"Invalid Item"  The Tree of the Fairies Jeanne, in the meadow I see fairy rings we would dance in, blowing dandelion seeds into the wind, clutching childish dreams. I return to the tree of our childhood and press my ear against the beech, listening. The smooth bark is cool against my face as I picture the last time I saw you. When you leaned back against the Fairy Tree, hands spread around the ancient trunk; did you know your fate? And that in the end the fairies, those mystical beings of legend, the ones we hoped to catch sight of as we made garlands of marigold and vetch would condemn you? Did your Voices tell you of the fire that would consume you, the kindling of your faith burned by heretical flames? That as we scattered petals across Domrémy Spring your ashes would be cast into the Seine, flotsam of politics? If you knew you would be sold to the English, a secular sacrifice, would you still have gone? I can not hear them, the Saints that whispered your doom, but you were always more devout than I. Of that I am glad. |
