Hello, sorry it has taken a while for me to reply, I've been hiding out a bit lately... You don't have to be embarrassed here, chances are that there are others here who do the same, and may themselves feel embarrassed to talk. (I must say congrats for not cutting in so long!!) Well, when you say "self mutilation" people tend to think hurting/injuring/destructing parts of the body via cutting, banging and so on. You aren't alone in thinking it's just that. A lot of people are unaware of different types of self harm which can include but is not limited to: scratching, cutting, burning, hair pulling, drug usage, banging, avoidance of people, biting, and the list goes on. This can be considered self harm. Personally I do not know much of it, perhaps it may be formally considered to be trichotillomania. I do know there is a website you may want to check out that is about trichotillomania - http://www.trich.org/ Check it out, and perhaps see if it sounds familiar. I'm sorry to hear your family take it as a joke, it's hard to go through anything really when your family and those near you can't understand it. I will try and look up information on it for you. As for stopping, well... what do you do? I mean, what is the feeling you have before you do this? And where did you first get the idea from? And how old are you? (this information can help in seeing how it started and in turn find a way to stop) *hug* I hope all else has been well for you. Kelly |
