I have published one book POD though I went through 1st Books (now Authorhouse). I wouldn't do it again but that is a personal choice and I'm not saying that POD is the wrong way to go for you.

The people are pleasant enough to work with they simply don't tell you anything unless you ask and you seldom know all the questions to ask.

Type set: you choose what font you want. Don't turn in the manuscript in Courier if you want Arial or Garamond in the final product. They fix typos but at a rate of $75 an hour so make sure that your manuscript is good enough to show your high school english teacher.

Cover: unless the company you're looking at lets you furnish your own cover (some do, Authorhouse didn't) the cover will be, usually, ugly (your option then to pay them to fix it.)

Marketing: They will place links for the book on Amazon.com and other book sellers websites in addition to their own. The cost of POD is prohibitive so sales are not going to be phenomenal. They will do nothing further. You have to contact local bookstore, radio stations, newspapers, ect. You have to market your own product. The list of book stores in your area that they send you will include christian books stores, adult book stores, used book stores and stores that have been out of business for ten years.

Just to show you my example:

http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/1403317062/qid=1121949373/sr=8-1/r...

This is a 476 pg trade paper back being sold for $20.95. Can you imagine what the hard bound would cost? The book has an ugly cover, is type set in courier and is chock full of typos since I was rushed to get it to them.

If you choose to go POD, check out other places as well. Xlibris looks to have a decent set up, you furnish your own cover, choose the type, the chapter set up and a whole slew of details that Authorhouse wouldn't allow me to even look at. Ask several of them for info and then compare before you jump in.

Just my humble two cents... *Bigsmile*
