If you're looking for a market for your poetry, try literary journals, most universities have one. Pay from them is usually minimal, but every little bit helps. There's also a few independent literary journals floating around; some of these pay, some don't. Of these, a few of the best paying are The Sun, Tin House, Atlantic Monthly, and The New Yorker.
There is absolutely nothing wrong with starting at the top and working your way down. You just have to be prepared for rejection if you do. The better paying the market, the more likely you'll be rejected.
