I tend to write them both slmost simultaneously. The lyrics come first, and a tune follows immediately after. I can come up with a tune, but if you were asking me what key I sing my songs in, I'd have no clue. If the tune and lyrics don't fit, I tweak one or the other a little.
I agree that songs should be heard, not read. One comment I get a lot is "I wish I could hear it set to music". And sometimes you use word arrangements that you wouldn't normally use in poetry to fit the music.
And just to kill two birds with one stone, I would like some more reviews on my lyrics. Here is my whole Lyrics folder. I'm not asking you to review the whole thing, just one or maybe two, please. Of course, I'll be sure to review something of yours in return.
