Sample format for message boards used as a roundtable for authors to exchange reviews. |
DEMONSTRATION ROUNDTABLE ONLY NOT FOR REQUESTING REVIEWS If you want a review, please visit "Crosstimbers Review Forum" ▼ The primary purpose of the forum is to provide a roundtable for authors to discuss their works-in-progress and to exchange peer-to-peer reviews. This design can accommodate an open roundtable or a closed workshop. Important features include such things as Authors can post a public list of items for which they are seeking reviews; Other authors can see and review these items; Authors can share their reivews on the forum, which can serve as a launchpad for discussion; Authors can pose discussion questions in the forum; or Authors can introduce discussion topics. A feature of this roundtable is that the author's list of review requests is self-managed--once it's set up, authors can add, subtract, or otherwise modify their list and their changes will automatically appear in the roundtable forum. This is supposed to be an excbange. That means that if you post here asking for reviews, you should also do reviews of posted items. You don't have to review everyone, but you should strive for some balance between the reviews you recieve and the reviews you give. In our experience, review exchanges of this type sometimes result in authors finding critique partners--another author with whom they have a particular rapport. These can develop into long-term relationships and, sometimes, even collaborations. When this happens, it's an awesome experience for the authors involved. Everytime you review someone on here, keep in mind that it could be the first step in such a relationship. Below the Review Requests banner below, you will find a list of authors requesting reviews. Click on any of these author names, and you will see the items for which they are reqesting reviews. Review these items as you normally would. Unless the author's listing requests otherwise, we encourage reveiwers to post a copy of their reviews to this forum. When posting a review to the forum, please use the subject "REVIEW of <TITLE> by <AUTHOR>." Please be sure to respect the author's wishes with respect to posting reviews of their items to the forum. ▼ There are a few steps in order to get your items listed in the Roundtable. First, of course, you must select the items you wish to have reviewed. Next, you will need to create a ROUNDTABLE LINKS static item in your Writing.Com portfolio that contains a list of links to the above items. The ROUNDTABLES LINKS FILE tab on the main menu has more information on this file. Finally, after you have created this static item, do one of the following: Post a message to the Roundtable forum with the title "REVIEW REQUEST" that includes in the body of the message a link to your ROUNDTABLE LINKS file. (Post the file CONTAINING the links to the items. Do NOT put links to the items in your message.); or Email the forum manager with the subject "ROUNDTABLE REVIEW REQUEST and include a link to your ROUNDTABLE LINKS file in the body of the message. (As before, send a link to the file listing the items for which you are seeking reviews. Do not put links to the itmes in this email.) Either way, the forum manger will update the Roundtable page to include your file. After the update, the Roundtable page (this page) will display an exact copy of what's in your ROUNDTABLE LINKS FILE. It will be helpful if you follow the suggested formatting guidlelinse for the ROUNDTABLE LINKS file described on this page under the ROUNDTABLES LINKS FILE tab on the main menu. Note that after this process completes and the manager has updated the Roundtable page, it displays a copy of whatever is in your ROUNDTABLE LINKS file. If you change the contents of this file, the changes will automatically appear on the Roundtable page. (You might have to refresh the Roundtable page in yoiur browser first.) In this way, you can add to or delete from the list of items for which you are seeking reviews. Once you recieve a review, you should of course thank the reviewer both in an email and in a posting to the roundtable. You might also annotate the corresponding link in your ROUNDTABLE LINKS file to indicate the name of the reviewer. That would make it easier for reviewers to recall what they have reviewed. If you delete your ROUNDTABLE LINKS file, your author listing on this page will show a broken link. Your ROUNDTABLE LINKS FILE should contain: Your preferred display name (how your listing appear in the roundtable forum); A link to your WDC userID; and A list of links to the items you want to have reviewed. The only required element is the list of links to the items you want reviewed. The roundtable manager will use the defaults listed below if the first two elements are not included. The manager will use the {Insert:###} WritingML command to place a copy of your ROUNDTABLE LINKS FILE on the roundtable's page. Thus, the page will display an exact copy of what is in your ROUNDTABLE LINKS FILE. Most WritingML codes will work in an inserted file, but some, like a second {insert:####} tag, will fail. Of course, people need to be able to read your items. So, for example, item permissions could be set to PUBLIC . Alternatively, if you instead choose to use a passcode, you could include it in the ROUNDTABLE LINKS FILE or include a note that instructs potential reviewers to ask you for it. Bear in mind that posting the passkey here makes it public, which defeats the purpose of a passkey. If you do not include your preferred display name , the manager will use your WDC handle by default. If you don't include a link to your userID, the manager will insert one into your requested posting. Any of the various of WDC links to your items is acceptable, although the b-item format provides additional information to potential reviewers. If you are posting to a Book Entry, you might consider also including a link to the Book, since the Book Entry formats don't provide very much information. Incluiding things like genre or a teaser can help you get reviews, but it's not required. Note that if your file has broken WritingML in it, it could break the Roundtable page as well when we try to insert it. If this happens, we'll write to you and ask that you correct your file before we link it. The manager can't edit your file for you or even see the WritingML. If this happens, all the manager can see is that it is broken. We do have a suggested format, but it's also not required. Remember, though, that whatever is in your ROUNDTABLE LINK file is *exactly* what will appear on the Roundtable page. Optional Suggested format for ROUNDTABLEL LINKS FILE Replace items inside <BRACKETS> with your information. {b}<PREFFERRED NAME>{/b} {user:<USER ID>} <OPTIONAL LINE>{c:red}{b} Author requests reviews NOT be posted to the Roundtable forum. {/b}{/c} {b}Novel{/b} {bitem:<LINK TO CONTAINING FOLDER>} {b}Genre{/b}: <GENRE(S) OF THE ITEM> {b}Teaser. {/b} <SHORT TEASTER--USUALLY A COUPLE OF SENTENCES> <OPTIONAL LINE> Please write to the author for passkeys or further chapters. {bitem:<LINK TO FIRST CHAPTER>} {bitem:<LINK TO SECOND CHAPTER>} {b}Short Story{/b} {bitem:<LINK TO SHORT STORY>} Here's an example listing {b}Max Griffin{/b} {user:mathguy} {c:red}{b} Author requests reviews NOT be posted to the Roundtable forum. {/b}{/c} {b}Novel{/b} {bitem:2299511} {b}Genre{/b}: SciFi, LGBTQ+, mystery {b}Teaser. {/b} A headless corpse, a mass interplantary evacuation, and two teen-aged runaways challenge Marine MP Raf Martinez and Navy Medic Toshi Watanabe on the mining moon Cabot's Landing. {bitem:2307868} {bitem:2308339} Please write to the author for passkeys or further chapters. {b}Short Story{/b} {bitem:2303342} Which results in this listing when inserted into the roundtable page.
