During NaNo you write 50k new words of a novel (draft) from 11/1-30.

BUT: What If...

... I realize during Prepping that a story I wrote MONTHS ago for a contest is actually a (possibly) important scene in my upcoming Novel?*Shock2*

When I write the 50k words "around" the "seed" story/scene ā€“ of course NOT counting them to the Word Count*RollEyes* ā€“ then it's NOT cheating... or is it!?*Shock2*

Ideas, thoughts?

I think you can do what works for you. I would be inclined to include your story, but not record those words for NaNo.

Dragon Vale Insignia

Mod Squad

Not cheating since you're not counting the words of that story you wrote but plan to include it in your novel. If you rewrite those words then those rewritten words counts towards Nano total word Count. So work with what you can do.

Agree with this. Several writers I know (they are their own group) started their novel last week, and will only count the words from today on. One I know already has 10k words, but that means she just has to add 50k more.

It is 50k words of a novel/book. There is nothing in the rules about it being new.

So... go for it! And good luck!
