A month-long novel-planning challenge with prizes galore. |
Posted in 2019 but still applicable. We've had some issues with this in the past, so I wanted to clarify the 72-hour rule, especially for newcomers. It's okay to work ahead. The issue is that some people have misinterpreted this particular rule in the past. It doesn't matter which assignments you do in which order, but if you don't log an assignment within 72 hours of logging the previous assignment, you'll be disqualified. For the math-challenged, 72 hours is three full days (3*24=72). Example: You're an overachiever and you've managed to do the first two weeks' worth of assignments on October 1, and logged the last one at 11:59 pm. You may think you have until the 15th to log the next assignment. But if you don't log something else by October 4 at 11:58 pm, you'll be disqualified from the primary award. Some other examples: Log the first assignment on October 1 at 3:00 am. Your next log must occur before 3 am on October 4. You've been working diligently, logging one assignment a day from October 1 through October 10. Then on the 11th your in-laws show up unexpectedly and stay overnight. This screws up your schedule and you can't write again until October 13. That's okay, as long as you log something before 72 hours have passed. You log an assignment on October 1. You log the next one on October 3. On the 5th you play catch-up, logging three assignments, for a total of 5. You're fine. One additional caveat: If you're submitting to a Contest Round, the hard deadline for that is 12 noon, WDC time, on the Sunday following the contest round. If you're just doing the exercise without participating in the Contest Round, you can log it at any time - bearing in mind the 72-hour rule. If you want to know how much time has elapsed since your last assignment was logged, check the log (linked in the forum description above), look up your name on the left and the "Time Elapsed" column three cells over. This gives the time in decimal hours since your previous log (for instance, 1 hour 30 minutes would show up as 1.50. Don't make us do the work to convert that to hh:mm format, because we're lazy.) Feel free to ask any questions if I still haven't explained this very well. That really helps a lot. Thank you. Write On! C. L. Hammer āThere is no rule on how to write. Sometimes it comes easily and perfectly: sometimes itās like drilling rock and then blasting it out with charges.ā ~ Ernest Hemingway |
If I work ahead can I just post the things on the day they're due anyway so I don't have to worry about the rule? |
Nope. You can't exceed 72 hours between posts, even if you work ahead. The system is automated. Cheers, Michelle Battywyn |
Okay, thanks. |
Sooo quick question that may have already been answered but I'm not sure. If I post the first assignment on the first I can post the second assignment on the third and the third assignment on the sixth if I post each at the same time on those separate days, correct? If not I may be more confused than I thought. ** Image ID #2258136 Unavailable ** |
You got it! (Except Day 1 + 72 hours = Day 4) You can also keep track of your "Hours Elapsed" on the log: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1W5FUwCpV0g3LPqd0SS-lxiaUPrhbRSKLWpi0P4gW... Keep that number under 72 and all is well. Cheers, Michelle Battywyn |

I like this rule because it eliminates fallout. Many people work together to make this wonderful opportunity available, and it doesn't cost a red cent or grey one either. Yes, it takes thinking and some creativity but these are wonderful ingredients for a fabulous story. I believe that every story that wants to be borne should have every opportunity for life. Question: If I don't do the assignment for Monday 10/11 but instead I log 10/12 on Monday, how many days do I have to log in that previous assignment? 72 hours? or it doesn't matter which assignment I log in as long as I log in something? That way I can wait for doing that assignment much later because I am waiting on a book I ordered that is crucial for that particular assignment, so I'd rather wait a few days. (I hope I make myself clear?) Live like a poet Be careful out there! |
72 hours? CORRECT or it doesn't matter which assignment I log in as long as I log in something? CORRECT That way I can wait for doing that assignment much later because I am waiting on a book I ordered that is crucial for that particular assignment, so I'd rather wait a few days. You can submit assignments in any order, so long as you don't exceed 72 hours between submissions. (I hope I make myself clear?) Crystal GREAT question. Cheers, Michelle Battywyn |

Thanks for the bribe! No, my jobs are a) tech support for Prep-related issues b) contest round judging coordinator c) not answering the same questions repeatedly. C is why I tried to clarify the system we use. Bribery, is there an extra charge for this? Another way to make certain to keep within less than 72 hours between assignment submissions is to use a dry-erase board/calendar, cellphone, tablet or something and set reminders. It's all about being consistent and getting the project completed. Reasonable pressure often stimulates creativity that otherwise would languish and possibly become lost forever. Word art is very much worth taking on this challenging and wonderful opportunity. Think, take notes, imagine, take notes, and then write with might for reader's delight.
