I think that much description tends to overload a reader. A few descriptive adjectives/adverbs are fine, but not for every aspect of a sentence.

I believe if you are writing a non-fictional account of the Reds for a children's story, using proper names would be okay, as long as it doesn't libel (a published false statement that is damaging to a person's reputation; a written defamation) the person cited. If it's a fiction story, just use a false name. For the record, slander is a spoken statement.
