a short essay on the current Nursing career situation in the Philipppines
[Introduction]
The Resting Nurse

Nursing in the olden times has been a womanly proffesion; previously dominated by women. As it was first professionalized by Ms. Florence Nightingale, the Lady with a Lamp. Through the years, with the emerging changes in lifestyle and trends, nursing has become a profession not only just for women but for men as well.
Currently, in the Philippines, where it has been tagged as the Number One Producer for Nurses, there are already a lot of nurses, not to mention - registered nurses... who are unemployed. This has become my concern and for those people who have something to do with this. More schools open up Bachelor of Science in Nursing Degrees without properly screening their students. Hundreds of non-medical schools have suddenly been offering BSN courses to cater the demands of nursing. But lo, and behold, with this situation continuing over the past 5 years, the boom of nurses is actually what we are experiencing now. More and more nurses are produced each year with the hopes that they might help their families, but unfortunately, the hospitals in the Philippines are no longer accommodating the surplus of nurses because there has been a great change in the nurse-patient ratio in the hospitals. More nurses are produced each year and with that, we can question of their competence and knowledge regarding safe and effective nursing care to their patients.
Theses nurses are left out; not all are accommodated to hospitals, not all are going to practice nursing, not all are sticking up to their degrees earned, some even work in call center industries, which may sound related to nursing, because you actually deal with people, and you also tend to work in grave yard shifts, but, it is too far from BSN. Some nurses whom are already registered nurses are also left jobless because the hospitals couldn't longer provide vacancies for them. Wasted chances, wasted efforts and wasted time. These unemployed nurses are noe tagged resting nurses because they have not practiced yet their profession.
I do hope that the government and the rightful agencies that should be acting upon on this matter may do something worthwhile so that in the future, there will no longer be resting nurses.
Thanks and good day.
