L'aura del campo

'é a lua, é a lua, na quintana dos mortos'
♣ Federico García Lorca ♣

Higgins Street Bridge, April 25th 2009, Missoula, Montana

L'aura del campo. A breeze in the meadow. So it began the last day of Spring, 2005; on the 16th day of the month of Light of the year 162. This is a supplement to my daily journal written to a friend, my muse; notes I do not share. Here I will share what the breeze has whispered to me.

Angel of Light

His divinity —
traded for an affinity
for the fruit of knowledge —
his Paradise lost.

Campana sobre campana,
y sobre campana una,
asómate a la ventana,
verás el Niño en la cuna.

Belén, campanas de Belén,
que los ángeles tocan
qué nueva me traéis?

Recogido tu rebaño
a dónde vas pastorcillo?
Voy a llevar al portal
requesón, manteca y vino.

Belén, campanas de Belén,
que los ángeles tocan
qué nuevas me traéis?

Campana sobre campana,
y sobre campana dos,
asómate a esa ventana,
porque ha naciendo Dios.

Belén, campanas de Belén,
que los ángeles tocan
qué nueva me traéis?

Caminando a media noche
¿Dondé camina pastor?
te llevare a cuídarte
como a Dios mí corazón

Belén, campanas de Belén,
que los ángeles tocan
qué nueva me traéis?

Jouez hautbois, résonnez musettes !

Il est né le divin enfant,
(He is born, The Divine Child,)
Chantons tous son avènement !
(Let all sing His nativity.)

Depuis plus de quatre mille ans,
('Tis four thousand years and more,)
Nous le promettaient les prophètes
(Prophets have foretold His coming,)
Depuis plus de quatre mille ans,
('Tis four thousand years and more,)
Nous attendions cet heureux temps.
(Have we waited this happy hour.)

Chorus

Pour un dieu quel abaissement !
(Oh how great humility!)

Chorus

Partez, grands rois de l'Orient !

Il veut nos cœurs, il les attend :
He yearns for our hearts, he awaits them,
Il est là pour faire leur conquête
He is here to conquer them.
Il veut nos cœurs, il les attend :
He yearns for our hearts, he awaits them,
Donnons-les lui donc promptement !
So let us give them to him quickly.

Chorus

O Jésus ! O Roi tout-puissant

and the sun left and darkness came 8 and the cold of endless nights embraced us but all the same i held you as if the day would never come and in those moments heart to heart i felt the embrace of embers warmth. 50

and the night grew darker still 7 till midnight and mid day became as one and frost lay on theland deep tendrils sending roots to frost our spirits still our song that sustains us and the nights grow long and day light becomes a memory. 54

and the promise i made to you to never let go sustains me through these hours of grief without the relief of knowing whether we will last the night you need not speak nor spare your breath breathe in my warmth until the sun returns 54

as it always does for those who live or die tonight we all are blessed in her sight the snow queen deigns to let go her reigns/reins and returns to her fortress of ice while dim light dawns and gathers strength on far horizons 53

hold me tight as frost melts from your eyes behold the dawn and hw promises are kept by those who know that all shall pass through voids tunnel to rejoin in light every night that hearts beat in harmony to the melody we weave 55

Sinterklaas Kapoentje is December 5th in Holland. And elsewhere... I remember Marloes explaining the holiday to me when we were in Orosi, Costa Rica (the owners of the hostel were also Dutch!). Petra explains what it is in "Saint Nicholas and Pete I had a Dutch friend here who celebrated it. Frances always made bags of cookies or chocolates or something. One year she gifted me "Skin so Soft" for my travels. I still have it. Frances and Tweetie from December 2008:

(Dutch)
Sinterklaas Kapoentje,
Leg wat in mijn schoentje,
Leg wat in mijn laarsje,
Dank je Sinterklaasje!
(English)
Saint Nicholas, Little Rascal,
Put something into my little shoe,
Put something into my little boot,
Thank you, little Saint Nicholas!

This is a very old traditional song. The shoes and boots became stockings in the USA.

The song itself is a short poem: 6/6/6/6 with a similar ending -je which is a diminuative. To make a silly remix (because silly works and is memorable) the same cadence is important. Since English rhymes on stressed syllables this might work:

Sinterklaas remix

         for Diane

Here comes sister Shelley.
Here comes brother Billy.
Pat me on my belly.
I'm still hungry, silly.

All I could think of was crickets: creak crick crick crick

CAROL OF THE CRICKETS

creak crick crick crick
creak crick crick crick
creak crick crick crick
creak crick crick crick

Hark! how the bugs,
Sweet lonesome bugs,
All scrape their legs,
Come here my babe,
Autumn draws nigh,
Summers last sigh.
Now we grow bold
'fore we grow old,

creek crick creak crick

creak crick creak crick

This is our song,
One hundred strong,
All the night long,
Our end is nigh,
Do not ask why,
Just hear our cry,
Soft lullaby.

Oh how we crick,
Oh how we creak,
Hiding's our trick,
Making you shriek,
Rubbing our legs,
Fervently beg,
Sadly we sing,
Season's last fling.

Weeping weeping weeping autumn
Weeping weeping weeping autumn

On, on we sing,
Knowing come spring,
Our offspring roam
in eve'ry home.

KE [177.290] (3.diciembere.2020)

[Repeat from the beginning]

For this song I actually prefer handbells to strings.

Shrek's Trek - The Movie

Unfortunately when I saw Trek I thought of a big green ogre on a voyage to the stars! Word associations are amusing aren't they?

After our defeat

Too few left
to rue those games.
We dig holes, gather reeds and tarps.
We cover our wounds
that weep with shame.

Tawny

Born of spirit and dirt,
she was raised to be proud
of her fruitful body:
splendrous, fulvous, unbowed.

© Kåre Enga [177.286] (18.november.2020)

24 syllables: 6/6/6/6 xaxa

Prompt: fulvous, a yellowish brown. "splendrous" is a less common spelling of "splendorous" that spell-check doesn't like... too bad... I looked it up at Merriam-Webster. Note: I had a co-worker named Tawny. She was proud, loud and unbowed. *Smile*

We are the vamps!

Over the river and through the woods
on nights when the moon is new,
we flutter and soar as we sniff the gore
of a cow that no longer moos.

Over the mountains and though the dales
we fly and start to croon:
we are the vamps coming to camp;
we're ready to make you swoon.

Over the cities and through the yards
we fly on winds that smell
of guts and breasts and sumptuous flesh
that soon will fall under our spell.

Over church towers and through the graves
we spread our joy; we must!
to snuff out the aches of the lives we take,
that come dawn return to dust.

Open your eyelids and stand up straight;
we never feast on the dead;
we like your blood in crimson floods;
scream if you must instead.

Over the river and through the woods
where werewolves begin to howl,
vultures scatter as if it matters
to vamps that are on the prowl.

A procrastinator gives thanks every November

I'm grateful for
January, March and December
for giving me extra
days to catch up,
for February that cuts
winter's grief short,
and September to remember
golden autumns past,
and for May when spring's warmth
returns — at last,

and every month
that adds to the years,
hopeful that I may live long enough
to let go of my fears —
and all my stuff.
