The second of my collections of poems written for "Express It In Eight."
As usual these days, I choose blog format because it offers more space for the work.

Seasons

The season swings around quite operatic
in the muted hues of autumn so dramatic
and baritone sounds of distant thunder
bring threats to rip our summer peace asunder.

So winter steps once more upon the stage
as Earth turns quite icily her orbital page
and thoughts turn to another promised year
when spring will paint the skies so bright and clear.

Weather

When the storm builds and lightning strikes
it’s not hard to feel a stirring,
the blood racing and mind alert,
perhaps the braver minds preferring.

While the quiet times do lull and shine,
the sun in heaven smiling
and peace abounds in heart and mind,
till fog’s blanket wraps with sleep beguiling.

The Old Man Asserts His Rights

Shoo! Get off my lawn!
You unwashed gaggle of no-goods,
don’t you trample on my new-mown grass,
my neatly tended sward,
digging in my luscious topsoil
and raking lumps and bumps.
Be off with you!

Damn starlings.

A Song of Lost Marbles

Marbles! I lost mine years ago,
not figuratively but in reality
(flirtation with insanity a thing
of later, teenage years),
and those bright, cold globes
of clear glass shot through with colour,
obsession to some, for others a game,
fed my nascent collective drive.

Vicks VapoRub

Vicks VapoRub
green top, blue tub
granny’s remedy
piercing smellery
no more snuffles
or sneezing ruffles
magical lotion
without commotion.

Guessing

“How long should you boil an egg?”
The answer is quite dubious,
it being so long ago -
I play for time and memory,
“Hard or soft boiled?”
“Hard,” he replies, to my relief,
thinking overshoot won’t matter,
“Two minutes of boisterous boil.”

Training

Potential is not sufficient,
it may be much more than required;
if skill is developed proficient,
with ease is the task inspired.

So practice may not render perfect,
improvement it always supplies;
hard work and honing of intellect,
is bound to deliver surprise.
