Matter is anything with mass. Energy is somewhat more complicated to summarize. For one thing it isn't physical in the traditional sense even though it obviously exists. A standard trait of energy is it has no mass which is confusing since it still involves particals. My special definition is "the flow of movement between similar particals". Ex: Sound is produced by the vibrations of particles transfering across each other. In other words, sound (like all energy) is a wave. Photons, however, have the mysterious property of being matter (like protons) but without mass! This is where quantum physics comes in and where I bow out (oh wait, in the quantum realm I can't say where I bow out!-really bad joke for physic geeks)
