These are short poems, many written for {item:"EXPRESS IT IN EIGHT Open in new Window. or other challenges. Don't let the size deter you, although short and to the point, many of these poems have much larger messages.

You can cut to the chase
Through thick and thin
Go the whole nine yards
And you can say that again

You can throw the towel
Into a kettle of fish
But can't tell the difference
Between a plate and a dish

Written for "EXPRESS IT IN EIGHT Open in new Window.; TOPIC: Write a poem about a happening.

You ask me, "What's happening?
Did you get your new PC?"
"I did, and it's not working;
I checked all that it could be."

"So, I called the IT helpline.
Hey seeking help ain't no sin"
The IT guy listened, and then asked,
"Did you plug the damn thing in?"

Written for "EXPRESS IT IN EIGHT Open in new Window.; TOPIC: Write a sinking poem.

The sky is gray and gloomy
And a chillness fills the air.
My heart is sad and lonely
As I sink deeply in despair.

I long to see the sunshine
And feel a warming breeze,
To hear the children laughing
Bringing an end to my unease.

Written for "EXPRESS IT IN EIGHT Open in new Window.; TOPIC: WRITE A VAULT POEM.

All the vaults stand empty
Doors open, black inside
This night the dead wander
while the living shake and hide

Returning before the sunrise
They no longer will be seen
Secure behind their vault doors
Until next Halloween

This eight-line poem is written as an introduction to a Halloween poem in my port, "All Hallows' EveOpen in new Window.

Written for "EXPRESS IT IN EIGHT Open in new Window.; TOPIC: WRITE A POEM ABOUT RUINS, PHYSICAL and/or EMOTIONAL.

An old insane asylum
stands on the edge of town,
Where the mentally ill
Were treated and cast down.

The building's in ruins
And it's haunted they say.
The insane they tortured
Still scream there today!

Written for "EXPRESS IT IN EIGHT Open in new Window.; TOPIC: Meant * Except

I meant to spend some time today.
But time has a habit of slipping away.
I’ll do it tomorrow if it works out that way.
Maybe next week when I have a free day.

My procrastination is never fun.
It stops me from finishing what I’ve begun.
I tend to say to myself, “I’ll get back to this one.”
Except, I already know it will never get done.

Topic: WRITE A FLICKER POEM

The sun has now hidden behind the trees.
Leaves are whispering in the slight breeze.
Down by the river, I hear a frog croak,
As darkness enfolds the land in its cloak.

Engulfed in the halo cast by the fire,
Admiring the song of cricket’s night choir.
The flickering flames dance to their tones
While chasing the cold and damp from my bones.

The Tree

I came upon an ancient tree,
That whispered out its secret to me.
"One key will unlock your every desire.
While the others unlock the gates to hell’s fire.
Pick the right one, you’re wishes come true,
But choose the wrong one, it’s the end for you!"
The temptation was great as I looked at the keys.
But not great enough to risk my soul in Hades!

Today is your birthday, you turn twenty-three.
So, I should gift you, but you’re gifting to me.
That’s why I love you and don’t want to leave,
And visit you mornings, afternoons and days eve.

It’s not just my friends or new people I meet,
It’s all that you offer, this website's complete.
So, I say thank you, and happy birthday to you
For all that you give me and all that you do.
