Well, hello there! So you've come to visit my blog. Don't expect me to be consistent. I suck at that. Almost nine years of using the same blog and there was still space for more entries in the book. Shows you how much I kept up with the thing. Still, I've changed so much over the years it was time for a make-over that matches the now me. Hence this blog was born.

Why, Pretty in Black, you might ask. Well, black is my happy color. I've tried to deviate from the color, but it still ends up dominating my wardrobe. Some might say I'm equal parts Morticia and heathen, with a dash of inappropriate humor. Even in my heathen ways I lean a bit more left than right.

By the way, I love this song. It makes me want to run out into the woods and dance skyclad beneath the moon; adorned with horns atop my head, of course.

I'm glad you're in a better job situation. I'm reminded of when my brothers were younger and working at one of our local pizza places. Their boss wasn't too keen on his employees taking breaks for some reason. "If you've got time to lean, you've got time to clean," he would say. Needless to say, my brothers didn't work there very long. I wish you the best of luck.

Let's see, in the coming year, I'm hoping to see a doctor and/or an allergist to figure out why my cough isn't going away, and what I might be allergic to or intolerant of that I need to remove from my diet. I'm working on rebuilding my writing routine so I can finally finish a draft of the YA sci-fi novel I've been trying to write for two years, as well as other writing projects.

And either as many craft projects my sister and I have made, I really need to change how my days go so I can actually take the time to get photos and upload more inventory to our Etsy shop. I want to rebuild my savings for a cushion, but I may be saving for a new car instead. We'll see how the year goes.

I'm retired now. Moving those bodies (many times without the help I needed) played hell on my back. As it does with most of us.

I didn't know you were a nurse? Like you I loved the patient care aspect of the job. We get to meet some amazing humans with wonderful stories to tell, right? I'll miss the residents and will still go back to visit one. Most of my residents were sad about me leaving but I feel they will get over it pretty quick. There was one that wouldn't for which I will visit until he passes. He's 95 and on hospice. He's got an attachment to me, always asking where I am when I wasn't working.

You got that right about nursing homes being challenging. They are stressful places to work, especially when you work in memory care. I've been bitten, hit, pinched, and had literal shit thrown at me. Though the rewards of working with the residents outweighed these bad experiences. For me it was the high patient to worker ratio put in place to save money that finally made me leave.

I've heard about how other countries don't put their loved ones in nursing homes and consider it the families responsibility to care for them. I can see the pros and cons of that. In some cases I've wondered why they didn't just keep their loved one at home, especially when they only need limited assistance like making sure they don't fall in the shower. When it comes to the later stages of illness, where their loved one needs more extensive help, it makes total sense why they'd seek assistance from a facility.

I have nothing against people taking trips either. My issue was with them not including it in their budget to staff the place properly, yet it was in their budget to pay for her out of country vacations. This last place was private pay. The families of the residents paid 8 thousand a month for us to care for their loved one there.

Medical care is not bad in Thailand. Poor people probably have it better then most anywhere else as a clinic visit is 30 baht ($1). However... nursing care is zilch as family is supposed to do that.

I have nothing against folks taking trips. The problem isn't where they went but why patients aren't prioritized over money.

Whoo! You're not kidding! Nursing home care is the most demanding and the lowest paid and appreciated. It makes absolutely no sense. It should be the complete opposite.

The patient-to-nurse ratio is always absolutely ridiculous! The nurses and CNAs bust their ass, while the administrators live cushiony lives off of the nurse's and CNA's hard ass work.

You make more working in a doctor's office or right at it. But you make the most working in the hospital. (also demanding, but still not as!)

I miss nursing for the people -- definitely not the grinding work and BS!

It pays better than caring for the elderly. You'd be shocked at what goes on in nursing homes. Our elderly deserve better.

What does it say about our priorities when moving goods pays as good, if not better, than caring for the elderly? Congratulations! I hope it works out... and am looking forward to the invite for the housewarming.

Now that six months have passed, nicotine cravings rarely occur, so I don't think it will interfere with writing anymore. Although yesterday, I walked out on my front porch as if to smoke a cigarette, out of old habit. Then I was like, Oh, wait, I don't smoke anymore. I wasn't craving a cigarette, it was just an old habit after a particular activity.

Types of food didn't really effect my cravings for a cigarette. More so particular activities. Like sitting outside watching the birds with my first cup of coffee, while smoking a cigarette. I thought about the Keto because of the high protean, but opted out because of all the fatty stuff. My boyfriend wouldn't be able to eat half the stuff because of his heart. Instead, we stay on a heart healthy diet....High fiber, vegetables, fruits, low fat meats, no bad fats etc. Except, I get a nice juicy medium rare steak once a week while he eats fish.

You are right, it does play a part in emotional well being. Maybe because taking care of ones self by healthy exercise and eating habits is a form of self love.

Great idea about the writing journal. At one time I was carrying around a small notebook, thinking I'd write notes on little thoughts I had during the day that could eventually be worked into poetry. I'd forget I had the notebook and never write in it.

Maybe I'll try this again and will myself to remember to utilize it.
