Ambition 2

Jimmy, oh Jimmy, where have you been?
I told you, mom, I’d not be seen
for a while as I’m digging a hole
to China - it’s always my goal.

The back yard weren’t big enough
and the ground really tough,
so I dug in the golf course way over there;
now I hear Chinese voices - I’m nearly there!

Ruby-Red

A ruby-red poem
steeped in blood,
quite incarnadine
its arterial flood.

So bright red hot
in the verbal fire,
the words aflame
as the pyre burns higher.

What’s in a Name?

On Follow That Dream Parkway,
in Inglis, Florida,
the last house is numbered infinity,
the eight having fallen over
through sheer exhaustion
at the naming of the street,
perpetrated by someone not English,
judging by the spelling.

Goat

A curious creature the goat
(have no idea if they float),
their pupils are flat horizontal
so they see both behind and frontal,
though hooved they often climb trees
and do so with the greatest of ease,
but always, when asked how they are,
they respond with a very loud “Bah!”

Cricket

In the symphony of summer,
when the heat sets the shimmering tone
rebounding from the hard-faced earth,
and all life seeks the shade,
then sings the cricket with strident creak,
unfettered by the enervating day,
filling the parched and vacant space
to claim the clothes of silence.

Clear plastic angled across each other reflecting colours.

Obtuse Excuse

At cross purposes
we do collide,
our coloured services
be kept inside.

Our surfaces transparent
are angled square,
directions quite apparent,
no meaning there.

Silence

Seek the silent spaces to soothe your soul,
so says the sapient sage of centuries,
serene and safely seated in security,
swift to speak upon your singular search.

And silence sure would soothe uncertainty,
if such were simple to secure your succour
and soundless were the systems of existence,
surging streams and shouts, internal process.

For Express It In Eight, 05.25.23
Prompt: Write a poem about Silence.

Calamity

Okay, now it’s the red wire.
No wait, make that the white.
At least I think it was.
No, definitely the red.
Yes, of course I’m sure.
Cut the red wire.
Or…
Arnold, are you okay?

Photo of arms reaching over a gap.

Arches

Reach for the sky,
the clasp of aspirations,
arms uplifted,
or arms laid aside,
and bridging the gap
‘tween thee and me -
shall we sail on through
in the arc of reason?

Blue Moon

Just once in a blue moon,
then everyone was doin’ it,
a hundred versions very soon,
each and every one a hit.

‘Twas ‘34 when it was startin’,
Al Bowlly was amongst the first,
Dylan, Sinatra and Dean Martin,
so many more yet still we thirst.
