Echo

Here’s the best place to hear an echo
Echo
The sound rebounds from the mounds
Cho
While the hills still give us chills
Ho
All unseen if you see what I mean
O

Wednesday

TGIW
I don’t mean to trouble you
but the March to thirteen
is not nearly so mean
and scary to some
(although I am not one)
as I know that they say
it’s bad luck if Friday.

Line count: 8
Rhymed couplets
For Express It In Eight, 03.13.24
Prompt: Celebrate March 13.

The Happiest People in the World

I have it on good authority
that the Danes in the vast majority
have made it their single priority
to always expect the worst.

The result of this gen’ral mentality
in every eventual finality
they experience a joyful neutrality
never knowing a hunger or thirst.

Rhymed aaab cccb
For Express It In Eight, 03.12.24
Prompt: Write a poem about wanting something you can’t have.

The Baggins' home in the Shire.

Bag End

Peter Jackson and Mr Tolkien
in our minds forever frolickin’
sprinklin’ hobbits and their houses
in a story that arouses
adventurous spirit and derring-do
from Frodo’s door to Mordor too
and safe we are from evil’s blast
when underdogs win through at last.

A shadowy figure feels an invisible barrier.

Mime

Here at the barrier,
unseen but present,
the mime is halted,
progress is barred,
and hands explore
these mystic limits,
feeling obstruction.
The person dissolves.

Free verse
For Express It In Eight, 03.10.24
Prompt: As per illustration.

Time and Texture

Time and texture
go together like cheese and mold,
insomnia and stubble,
the Antarctic and cold.

One leads to t’other
as water flows downhill,
give a texture time
and we will pay the bill.

Rhymed abcb
For Express It In Eight, 03.09.24
Prompt: Time and texture.

Twilight

The old raven surveys his kingdom,
death and decay his daily dealing,
done the dream of decent dining,
departs his passion to the grave,
vanished.

Destruction now his nightly income,
his vagabond past beyond healing,
all his inky schemes are scattered,
thus far has gone the will to save,
banished.

An Ill Wind

It’s an ill wind that blows no one good,
it’s a hard rain that raises your hood,
a fierce drought that lingers too long,
a frozen winter with blizzard’s song.

It’s the thickest fog that holds us blind,
and the darkest night that looms unkind,
but take them all, put them together,
and in the end it’s all just weather.

Line count: 8
Rhyming couplets
For Express It In Eight, 03.07.24

Survivor

The trick, oh my benighted one,
is hear the voices if you must,
to be aware till they are done,
and steel yourself and never trust
the worm words of their tainted lure,
ignore their blandishments so bright,
refuse indeed each poisoned cure,
and so emerge into the light.

Apology

I really must beg your pardon,
but this morning is such a hard one
that I’m beaten by prompts too pretty,
and end up just feeling sh*tty.

You see my mind is occupied,
though to clear it I swear I have tried,
Small Talk made me think of starlings,
and they are to me such darlings.

Line count: 8
Rhymed aabb
For Express It In Eight, 03.05.24
Prompts: Focus on gratitude, connect with nature.
Note: Really couldn’t go with the prompts today. Sorry. But I was faced with two alternatives - duck today’s poem or write about something else. I chose the latter.
