A Reason to be Cheerful

Unstoppable I never am
though occasionally on top,
not of the world, you understand,
but perhaps some minor hilltop.

The cause is always just the same
and no surprises there,
‘tis writing blows away the blues
and banishes all care.

Prompt: What makes you feel unstoppable?

An American Icon

Little Ronny Howard,
all freckles and buck teeth,
still in awe of Andy Griffith,
having not yet met the Fonz,
makes a million movies,
as actor then directs,
wins awards for Cocoon
and for his Beautiful Mind.

Peek-a-boo

By sleight of mind
I hide the thing,
so you’ll not find
what makes it sing,
but here’s a clue
to help you through
(not make it worse):
its name is verse.

Prompt: Write a hard-to-find poem.

Eine Kleine Nachtmusik

Night owl slips through the secret hours
alone
nocturnal soul in the pale moonlight
alone
awake in the brooding silence of the night
alone
bleary eyes greet the dawning of the light
alone.

Freeish verse rhymed here and there
For Express It In Eight, 03.09.23

Pictorial representation of two ways at looking at nature.

Systems

Evolution has its hierarchy,
predation does too,
intelligence grants aristocracy,
and size lists who is who,
adaptability claims the win,
different skills, who loudest shouts,
but these reasons wear quite thin,
since we’re the ones who worked it out!

Song for the Postmodern

In the sixties we were just learning to fly -
now we can and inhabit the sky.
Imagination sets the day’s agenda
and we’re all girls with the name of Brenda.
With no bounds to personal desire,
we fly forever higher and higher,
and though the sky is total illusion,
it matters not to our delusion.

Optical illusion of a man being followed by a giant cat.

Tiddles

Old Jerry the Chemist,
and his special catfood,
does not notice the effect
it has on Tiddles.

On his walk in the square,
blissfully unaware,
he might appear as food
for Tiddles.

Marionette moved by strings from a giant hand.

Puppet Master

Come now
Observe how
The eye deceives
What the mind receives
You see the strings
Controlling things
But the marionette
Moves this duet.

Density

Density? I’ll give you density.
My head, that’s what’s dense,
dense like a rock, so hard to pierce,
dense like a forest, too full of thoughts,
yet porous too, holed like a sponge,
words and memories leaking,
pouring from every orifice, spring water
lost in the racing stream of life.
Don’t talk to me of density.

Line count: 8
Free verse
For Express It In Eight, 03.02.23
Prompts: Density, porous.

Catwalk

You mince your way in self congratulation,
certain now you’ll meet their expectation,
for who’d deny so sweet a manifestation,
being innocent and without dissimulation,
so fetching, your proud perambulation
and calculated in pure ingratiation,
yet did I spy a flicker of hesitation
betraying still your aim of fabrication?

Line count: 8
Rhymed aaaa
For Express It In Eight, 03.01.23
