Words: 281 // FOR "Daily Flash Fiction Challenge" ![]() It was the last day of the green drive. Principal Norhonha was on stage, holding the mic, urging students to 'keep it up'. "We had to announce prizes, so there had to be a last day," Principal Norhonha said. "But you must remember, dear children, that mother earth needs your care every day. Every day is earth day, and the green drive is forever." Dad whispered to Mom. "I know she's giving an important message, but I wish she'd hurry up and announce who won." "You are worse than the kids," Mom scolded as softly as she could."The green drive really has made the kids more environment conscious." "But I want to know if my kid won!" Mom gave him a friendly smack. "You big baby!" she admonished. "SHHHH," hissed a few voices around them. Mom and Dad subsided, each blushing. Principal Norhonha was at last talking about winners. "Now we have so many good entries that we've decided to break it up into sections and categories. So - the Primary Section prize for the Don't Litter category goes to Jeremy and Team!" "How many categories before we reach ..." Dad began, but Mom nudged him hard and he sank back into his seat and feebly applauded. " .... Middle School for Save Our Trees ..." Dad leaned back in his seat. He felt his eyes closing. He didn't see someone signaling from backstage. He didn't feel his wife standing up and creeping away. He awoke to a hard poke in the ribs. "Dad, Dad, were you asleep? Is that why you didn't come on stage when Mom did? I won the overall trophy, Dad, and parents had to be on stage. Here's my trophy, look!" |
