Sounds really like a fun time in the early days when you were in school. Alas, we in the Netherlands don't really celebrate Halloween. I think we miss out on something.
Sherwood Anderson was quite well-known at one time. I first found out about him in my jr. high reading, which must be in the late 1950s. I like the sincerity in his lines.
