A Journal to impart knowledge and facts |
July 22, 2015 I'm going to start today to record on a daily basis whatever happens to strike my fancy. So, it is a very cool breezy day. I just posted 5 short book reviews to The Monthly Reading Challenge. I'm suppose to put away some winter wood today from the woodpile outside but I'm playing hookey from work to write so starting this blog will get done. I'm having a daily fight with a flock of English Sparrows that are trying to take over my barn. They are making a terrible mess so they have to go. I have destroyed several nests so far they don't leave but they get out of the barn when I am around. I'm just starting the fight so I guess I don't know how far I have to go to discourage them. I'm trying not to spread myself to thin on WDC because I find so many things that are interesting here and I am trying to work on a new story. I really enjoy sitting at my desk with a cup of tea and reading blogs on WDC. |
I'm spending April reading and catching up on yard cleaning. I've been walking and hiking. The weather is drawing me outdoors. The geese are flying over daily to their nesting areas. Green is appearing in the woods more densely every day. The horses are losing their winter coats. My granddaughters were here for a day. They surrounded the pony and sheds out a lot of her hair. The pony loves it when they are here. She seems to be depressed the day after they leave. They are too big to ride her now. This is one of the nicest ponies. She really likes little children. I found this quote in "A Treasury of Great American Quotes" by Charles Hurd. Quote: "Anger blows out the lamp of the mind." by Robert Green Ingersoll. Revel in each spring day. Reconnect with the great outdoors. Even a walk around the block in the heat of spring sunshine is rejuvenating. |
Monday I went hiking twice. Once at home with my dog. Then later on a local trail. The trail was long but we only walked about one and a half miles. It was very windy. We were near a local lake so we took time to watch the Muscovy ducks swimming around. The water was wind blown. There were fishermen braving the chill rough water. There is an article about "Gigantopithecus blackii, the largest primate that ever lived", on this link https://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2005/11/051112122318.htm I can always find something new published in science websites. the Dandelions are blossomed and the grass is growing. I can see green in the woods beyond the hay field. There is no turning back now. The sun will give us enough heat to continue on into summer. Have a good day. |
I was looking up facts about Easter today. There are a lot of holiday events within the lent season. One of them is the Thursday before Good Friday. This is the day the disciples would celebrate their last supper with Christ. A fact I noticed on Wikipedia states that eggs boiled with flowers take on a different color. Is this the way coloring eggs became a spring ritual? At one time people may have welcomed the ability to flavor their eggs with flowers. When spring hits more birds lay eggs. If you ever raised hens you will know that spring is the beginning of a new laying season. Eggs and Flowers would be fresh food for pioneers after a long winter. https://whatscookingamerica.net/EdibleFlowers/EdibleFlowersMain.htm Don't just run off and start eating flowers though. There are a lot of warnings on places that recommend flowers as food. Some of them don't agree with the digestive organs. Easter is a long Christian holiday culminating with the celebration of the resurrection of Christ. The Rabbit From My Window Hopping into view wiggle long ears, twitching nose, stops to test the scents. If you are celebrating Lent, Passover, or Ramadan at this time of year I wish you a safe and restful holiday. Just living is not enough... one must have sunshine, freedom, and a little flower. by Hans Christian Andersen Read more at: https://www.brainyquote.com/quotes/keywords/flower.html apondia#1781748 apondia#1781748 |
I worked on my portfolio today. It is getting more organized I hope. I'm just reading for the fun of reading this month. There are two books being read now: one is Tell The Truth, Shame the Devil by Melina Marchetta. The title is a quote from Henry IV. The other is a book I picked up for a buck in the Dollar General called Under Fire by Fred Burton and Samuel M. Katz. It is about the attack in Benghazi. Of course, the first story is fiction the second is nonfiction. Yesterday was a sunshiny day. I was able to get the main horse paddock cleaned up. A wind storm took down a lot of limbs off a tree and deposited them in the paddock. We also carted off all the recycles stored up from winter. The snow we had at the end of last week did not stay, so I'm getting out for longer dog walks every day. There is still a lot of clean up to be done. We had a wild weather winter with lots of wind which took down limbs and deposited them everywhere. Today is a rainy day. April flowers and summer birds are everywhere. |
