Girls -have- been taught to stand up for themselves, hence the gifts of pepper spray and air-horns when they leave for college. I think the problem is that they've been told they're wrong for dressing a certain way, so of course they're going to feel that if they take anything to the higher-ups, they're going to be seen in the wrong light. Women who have a sexual harassment complaint are the "whores." The men who perform the sexual harassment are "healthy, virile, manly." We praise sexuality in men and punish it in women.
A woman standing naked on the street should probably -expect- to be harassed, but she does not -deserve- to be harassed. It's the same if someone openly has a $100 bill in their back pocket. A person has every right to wear it there, but it would be foolish to expect people to not take advantage of that situation. HOWEVER, IT'S STILL A CRIME.
Why would one of those crimes be taken seriously by the police, while the other one would begin the report with, "Well, what was she wearing?"
It has made the headlines a lot lately. I've seen prom dresses that were quite revealing, but the ones making the news aren't nearly as bad. It would seem to be in the eye of the adult who makes the call. Then the other adults are stuck having to support him, to keep a united front.
I agree we need to spend more time teaching young men to respect young women. Too long, parents have excused themselves of responsibility when it comes to sons and have concentrated on the daughters' virtue. Boys can be told not to stare at another person's body, not to be aggressive, not to pursue a girl when she doesn't like his advances.
Girls can also be taught to stand up for themselves. I've seen men in the work place pinch young women or pull their bra straps. The girls didn't like it, but they were afraid to tell them no. They didn't feel secure standing up for themselves.
A good rant.
You're off to a good start! Keep up this quality and... something good will happen to you. Sorry, I have no abiity to inspire. But I like what you wrote!
