Hey Charlie, Now as an avid shopper you also have to consider girl math, you have to buy more to get the free shipping.
Your classmate sounds like a real smart fella there. SMH. I hate to use the term idiots but if the shoe fits.
Rudeness such as chewing with your mouth open so that I have to see your food disgusts me. Or someone who doesn't brush their teeth regularly Ughh. Gag... I can't.
I'm always early, I refuse to go if I'm going to be late, and when I worked everything had to be done on time if not early. I just can't with those who waste my time and think its funny being late. It's so disrespectful. Ok I'll stop and get off my soapbox now.
I'm glad I read this old blog. It clears some things up.
Me? I hold too much in. I literally have never felt safe to share with some groups. Weird in a way. It's more than just being burnt... more like having to look in a mirror and seeing what I don't want to see.
Wisdom.
Every time I read one of your blog posts I'm really glad I "know" you.
On that last one, about time and punctuality: also, some folks just don't consider responsibility or due dates or deadlines IMPORTANT enough to do it on time/be there on time.
I frequently do the same, IceSkatingSugarCube! I'll get somewhere like 15 minutes early and just hang out in the car until it's time to go in. I'll never understand the people who burst through the door 20 minutes late like 4 times a week.
I had to start leaning away from finance when I was making my list, otherwise it would have been all finance-related, Robert Waltz. The sad part is that this person who has been taking out all these loans is in my majors - finance and accounting. I'm still so confused. How did they get to senior-level finance with so little know-how. I don't get it.
I think that talking about their finances makes people uncomfortable because they know that there's a lot of shit they don't know. I think it makes them anxious to think about money and how they could be misusing it. Plus, people are like terrified of math of any sort. Usually when someone asks what my major is and I tell them, they respond with something about being bad at math. You should definitely write a personal finance book!
Aww, Alexi! It's great to see you back around. I'm sorry you've been having life issues. I hope you're doing much better now? You know I have a foul mouth. People definitely tend to jump straight to the worst conclusion when any problem arises, which is why you so frequently hear, "My computer is broken!" when there's really a simple fix. You should write a finance book too! There are so many scammy things out there that will totally mess with your personal finance if you fall into them... payday loans, credit repair scams, investment scams. I could write a book of my own, to be fair.
I've hung up the phone on people for that exact reasons, QPdoll is Grateful. I will gag if someone's chewing food in my ear like that. Just why. It's so gross. We need to get you some personal finance help! This is only tangentially related and not a statement on you, but one of the nonprofits I work with consists of me making budget plans for people who were recently homeless and have just gotten back on their feet. A lot of the people I work with have only been at their job for less than a month or been in an apartment for a week or two. My role is to gather all of their financial information and then consult with them on their bills, disposable income, purchases, and stuff like that. It's shocking to see the financial decisions people make after just being homeless. I'm like, dude, you were just homeless 2 weeks ago. Why would you enter a rental-purchase agreement for a 65" television that costs $30 per week and will require you to ultimately pay over $1000 more than the retail cost of the television????
The social skills class is so needed, Lostwordsmith. It bothers me so much when people aren't aware of their surroundings or their impact on others.
I don't know if it would be considered a basic life skill, but it could fall under customer service. It's absolutely rude and unprofessional to eat or chew gum when you're on the phone with someone!
Robert Waltz and Alexi, I am so bad with my finances. I live paycheck to paycheck and can never seem to keep anything in savings. Grr.
Hi Charlie, long time no speak as I was away due to life issues... A very intelligent and interesting blog Charlie. I liked it minus the swear words
Most things can be solved if one reads the small print, asks questions, keeps notes and then makes wise decisions, unfortunately people run headlong into calamity and then have the consequences to cope with afterwards.
Yes, Robert Waltz I have often thought about writing about the pitfalls of getting tangled in "Barbed wire Money Systems" I have seen so much of the disasters it has caused with some people. I have in the past been unconsciously roped into financial situations that were most unpleasant and having to make sensible plans to unravel them.
An interesting blog with much food for thought Charlie.
I could write a book on the personal finance topic. No, seriously, I could. The amount of brutal ignorance out there on the topic is astonishing, especially considering that the facts aren't exactly state secrets; it's all over the freakin' internet. Of course, that means that the misinformation is all over the freakin' internet, too. But it still boggles my mind how many people misunderstand things like how credit cards work, how interest is calculated (and how to make it work for you), what the marginal tax rate really means, how not to buy a car, rent vs. buy, why everyone should have savings...
Dammit. Like I said, I could write a book... but not in your blog.
The problem is, whenever I talk about this stuff peoples' eyes glaze over and they start fidgeting. It's not just the math part, either. The math is disgustingly simple. It's just physically and psychically uncomfortable for them. So I've learned to keep my fool mouth shut unless someone asks me a direct question. And they never do.
Also, I can't stand it when people are late for things. I would rather get there early and have to sit in my car for a few minutes then explain to people why I couldn't manage to get there on time. In fact, if I do happen to be late, I'd rather not go at all.
I used the same song in my blog, too! Yeah, that is seriously cold AF and nothing could induce me to go outside in that, other than maybe my house on fire.
