They did exist, it simply took longer for the whole to know about it. The internet has changed that, we've become an instant access society which has opened doors for good and bad. What I found sad was that Cicero made such a broad generalized statement in 43BCE and people are still quoting it now as if it applies. I'm not convinced it applied in 43BCE but I feel it is simply to broad and over simplified statement for our time.
The internet has made it easier for us to blog, journal, write short stories, e-books or poetry for the masses. I am not convinced more are writing what I am aware of is how easy it to access the ones that are. Authors before the net depended on different ways to promote their work so not everyone was aware of the variety. Then there was the expense of buying what you read. The net definitely made that cheaper, look how much is available to us.
We are more vulnerable I do agree because we are accessible.
Are children different now than the past, I agree with you... I don't see a big change, all I realize is how many are not parented because of the media coverage and the net. I'm almost 60, my parents were totally consumed in their alcoholic bliss they had no idea what any of us kids were really doing on any given day. It just wasn't out there like some of today's children. There are still many children who exist invisibly.
Great entry, Taz. I agree with you in all areas. Yes, it is wonderful that more people are writing and it is true that the children never liked to obey. And the fact that people attack each other is the same; except now, the ways differ because of technology.
I am, for one, very grateful for the technology. Otherwise, we wouldn't be able to communicate with each other as writers this extensively, ever.
There's still have an answering machine, a separate fax machine, and a home phone in our house, but they are for my hubby. I don't answer that phone, neither do I like talking on the phone at all.
I almost forget about answering machines. I don't know anyone with a home phone now. I like the idea of passing along a message to future generations through voicemail.
