A blog not so much for daily activities but to reflect on my past & my experiences.

On retiring after 56 years in paid employment, I looked back on some experiences that shaped and informed me. Some big, most quite small.

This blog will not focus on daily happenings, but will look at what has happened in my life, and also my reactions to some of the more significant events as i see them. I guess this is more a collection of themes that I might one day gather together as an autobiography - or make available to anyone who would want to use it in a biography, almost certainly only a curious family member. I should also say that this will not be in chronological order, more how my memory stimulates me in a particular direction at the time.

So let's see how it goes, and how committed I can be to the process.

I know. I think his world will have little in common with our world today. AI will rule the world and there will be no wars. Replicators will be in every household. Children will be designed for certain or specific roles. They will be bred in test tubes and have may parents. or they will be sent back to caveman days because there was one too many wars.

I need new hips, so don't think it's only you older folks... I'm glad YOU could get a new one. Or two with that newer hardware from the fall

So lovely to hear from you again. Not so nice to hear that you're in hospital though!

The healthcare systems in Aus and NZ are interesting, eh? We have great public healthcare, but for anything urgent or long-term, you really want that backup of private insurance. I have private health insurance for my family, for that reason. Yeah, it's expensive, but it's worth it.

Hope you're feeling better soon, and you're back on your feet, pain-free.

My husband is also a Vietnam vet. We were just commenting on how lucky we are to have survived it, and so many other things! Glad you have too. We know exactly what you mean.

Hi Grum!
I’ve been meaning to read this for a while after I noticed you had it posted on the Newsfeed. Sorry it took so long…
That must have been horrifying, but thank God you and your wife are alright (I use that term loosely, because it could have been a lot worse). The sad part about this is that this sort of thing happens more often than people realize.
About twenty years ago our local pharmacist, Peter (I can't believe I remember his name after all these years), who was known by everybody in our small town, was driving up to Medford, OR on Interstate 5 when a trailer came loose and crossed the meridian, hitting his car head on. The combined impact was about 140 m.p.h.
Needless to say, his roll of the dice wasn’t as lucky as yours, as he was killed instantly.
Live each and every day like it could be your last, because you never know what fate might have in store for you.
As my father once told me after I rolled his car when I was 16: “The car can be replaced, but you can’t.”

Tempora mutantur, nos et mutamur in illis.

I had to suffer through four years of Latin I high school, and all it’s left me with are a few useful tags. Well, it’s over four years since my last entry, and I’m now nudging 82. At this age, the most common topic of discussion is health, and I won’t bore you with mine (or lack thereof!). The biggest event over this four year period has been the birth of our first great grandson, Oliver, although we don’t really get to see enough of him. I wonder what his world will look like when he’s 82? Immeasurably different, I expect.
