Thoughts & ramblings, both philosophical & technical, about being an Editor & Publisher.
Trained in Visual Anthropology and Material Culture, I currently work as a consultant applying my skills in social research, critical thinking, and cross-cultural communication to my work as a social analyst and academic editor. My recent work includes applied anthropology (Social Impact Assessment/Baseline Studies) as well as academic research.

I also work in the world of academic publishing as an acquisitions editor for the Versita Open Access Books Programme, the Book Reviews Editor (Europe) for the Visual Anthropology Review, and I run a proofreading and copy-editing business, Whiteleaf Editing, that serves academic journals and students by helping writers to clarify their English and their ideas.

I satisfy my creative side with work in the creative and performing arts. Working with Dynamode as their Visual Anthropologist I am involved with an on-going and Europe-wide exhibition "Obicular Nebulosae" as both a performer and a cultural analyst.

I am currently working as Book Reviews Editor (UK/Europe) for the Society of Visual Anthropology's key journal, Visual Anthropology Review, which focuses on both the study of visual aspects of human behaviour as well as the use, by researchers, of visual media as tools for anthropological exploration and teaching. As Book Reviews Editor I am looking to hear from publishers, authors and experts in visual anthropology who have work they would like reviewed or who would like to act as reviewers.

As Managing Editor (Culture) I work in Open Access Book acquisitions for De Gruyter Open's OAB programme in Culture. Working together with a diverse team of Associate Editors, Reviewers and Language Editors I use the opportunity of being on the ground-floor of an emerging academic paradigm to engage the high-quality work of scholars who might have historically been marginalized from academic publishing perhaps because their monographs are highly illustrated or they are working in areas of the world that haven been peripheral to European and American academia previously. The ethos I encourage in my division is one of lateral thinking and connectivity between diverse scholars.

Whiteleaf Publishing is an emerging venture, an exploration into the potentials of merging multimedia technology and humanist business ethics with the publishing of academic monographs, edited volumes and film. As a bleeding edge initiative, Whiteleaf Publishing to produce theoretically and aesthetically important works that are rigorously peer-reviewed. In doing so we are also striving to address issues of social responsibility and environmental sustainability faced by academic publishers today.

Currently in its Research & Development phase, you can learn more about the project idea and our progress on Whiteleaf Publishing's dedicated website.

In my guise as Director of Whiteleaf Editing I am proud to be providing high-quality, professional proofreading and copy-editing services for a wide range of academics and projects. From students to institutions, from term papers to professional journals, Whiteleaf Editing is used by a wide range of scholars across the Humanities, Social Sciences, Business/Management, Law and Education. I also hold TEFL qualifications, which mean that my clients can be certain that I am able to provide precise explanations about grammar and language usage to any author - native and non-native English speakers/writers alike.

There are several different levels of "proofreading" that you can choose from. The most basic, and quickest, service is proofreading in which I check your document for correct spelling, grammar and mechanics usage. Above and beyond this basis, I offer three different stages of copy-editing as well as technical editing to help you polish your work.

When you contact me regarding work you would like proofread or edited, please tell me which level of proofreading/editing you want and whether you are working in British or American English.

My training in the style, mechanics and grammar of expository writing began over 15 years ago at the hands of several exacting mentors – one of whom chose to wield a water-gun as her medium of "encouragement." My own style is somewhat less flamboyant and I work to support authors and publishers by fostering creative connections. Sometimes these connections are in authors' own minds as I work with them to refine their writing style. Other times these creative connections happen by actively searching for the synergies between people's work and by linking up potential colleagues through the medium of academic publishing.

As The Editor I approach my work as a multi-faceted endeavour. Since 2005 I have worked in academic publishing first for Siberica as a copy- and graphics-editor, then for the Max Planck Institute as a copy-editor and doing transcriptions. I have also acted as a peer-reviewer for the JRAI (formerly MAN) and book-reviewer for Visual Anthropology Review.

Currently, I work as Managing Editor (Culture) dealing with book acquisitions for De Gruyter Open, Book Reviews Editor (UK/Europe) for Visual Anthropology Review and as Owner/Director of Whiteleaf Editing & Whiteleaf Publishing.
