Don't know if there are references I missed, because Polk Salad Annie and Tony Joe White mean nothing to me.

That being said, the image of the alligator eating an Annie salad is very strong indeed!

I like this a lot. Each couplet works. They should hang it in the libraries. I wish I had written it. (In fact, maybe I will tell people that I wrote it.)

You do these things without forced rhymes. Clever throughout. I like the poppies and the dirty parts the best.
