A story about two young teenagers in love.
Tamia stared at the boy sitting across the Maths classroom straight in front of her. Her heart beat rapidly; she didn’t think she’s felt this way about anyone before. She was definitely in love. Maleek Gideon, feeling her gaze on him, turned to look at her. She blushed and looked down at her work. When she looked back up at him, he winked at her. Her stomach did several front flips.
Tamia and Maleek had been going out for just over two months but Tamia still wasn’t used to it. In Year 7, she couldn’t stand him. He was short, annoying and they were constantly shooting rude insults to each other. In Year 8, Maleek started to grow, physically and mentally. He wasn’t as annoying as he used to be. They had become friends and they only occasionally spoke to each other outside school. It was when they started Year 9 that everything changed.
In their first science lesson, their teacher, Mr. Alam, announced that he made a seating plan. The whole class groaned.
“A seating plan?!” the twins, Brianna and Rihanna exclaimed.
“Has he gone completely barmy?” Steve Lawrence, a boy next to Tamia, said.
“No, I haven’t, Steve, I can assure you that I am mentally healthy,” Mr Alam said, amused by the class’s reaction. “I have made this seating plan boy/girl…”
They all groaned again, this tie louder. Mr Alam raised a hand to continue.
“I HAVE MADE the seating plan boy/girl to encourage you to behave. Now, I apologise to the good behavioural people in this class…” He gestured to the twins, who also sat next to Tamia, perfectly poised and in perfect uniform. She frowned; that wasn’t fair. There were other people in this class who were as good and smart as them, like herself.
“…but I know this class’s reputation, especially as I had most of you in Year 7.”
The teacher then told everyone to get up from their seats and stand at the back of the classroom. All the students glanced at each other nervously, wondering what idiot or boffin they’d been placed next to.
“I hope I’m not sitting next to Maleek,” Brianna said, emphasising his name. Tamia looked at her. It was funny of her to even mention his name, especially because all throughout Year 7 and 8, she had the biggest crush on him. But this year, she told everyone that she didn’t like him no more. No one believed her.
“Yeah, right!” Rihanna and Tamia said on the bus, on the way to school.
“For real, I don’t!” she exclaimed. Rihanna and Tamia exchanged knowing looks.
Back in the science classroom, Tamia glanced at Maleek. He had improved; she had to admit to herself. He was taller; the same height as her now. His hair cut made him look fresh. He still had the same wonderfully smooth, caramel-brown skin which made people with spots envious.
“Class!” Mr Alam yelled, snapping Tamia out of her trance. “Settle down!” The class soon hushed down. He then started to call out the seating plan.
“Steve Lawrence!” he shouted out. Steve groaned and sat on the first seat of the first row.
“Natalie Huggins!”
“Ohhhh!” The class hollered out as Natalie, a pretty girl with blond hair and blue eyes, made her way reluctantly to her seat next to Steve, who grinned at her. Natalie turned around to Tamia.
“Help,” she pleaded. Tamia looked at her pitifully.
“Maleek Gideon!”
Tamia’s head turned around so fast, her hair hit Brianna on the face.
“Oh, sorry!” she apologised sheepishly, but Brianna didn’t seem to notice. She too was busy watching Maleek sit to his seat next to Natalie.
“Tamia Kobe!”
Tamia nearly dropped her bag in shock. “What?!” she exclaimed.
“Oh, shame!” Brianna said, laughing, but her eyes didn’t seem to match her expression. Tamia forced her legs to walk and sit down next to Maleek. He turned to face her.
“Hello,” Maleek said to her, surprising her quite a bit.
“Erm…hey,” she said awkwardly, putting her bag under the desk. The teacher called out the next name, a boy called Christian Bennon.
“You know, it’s funny how we always end up sitting next to each other in lessons,” he said. It was true; in Year 7, they sat next to each other in science and maths. In Year 8, in science and sometimes English and maths.
Tamia looked into his eyes. Maleek had nice eyes; dark and amazingly long eyelashes, perfectly defined.
“Maybe we were meant to be…” he faded off, looking into her eyes as well. They sat there looking into each other eyes for quite a while until the teacher yelling brought them out of their daze.
“Everyone look this way!” he shouted. “Steve, stop trying to flirt with Natalie. It’s obvious she’s not interested.”
The class burst out laughing. Maleek and Tamia looked away from each other, confused. Then they both looked back at each other, then back away.
That wasn’t the first time that had happened, either, Tamia thought, twirling her pencil in her hand. Back in Year 8, the same thing had occurred, this time in a Maths lesson. There was always a strong connection and powerful chemistry between them two; it’s just that they didn’t want to admit it.
Once in the corridor, on the way to English, they had an argument…about Brianna.
“Just tell me, Brianna still likes me, doesn’t she?” Maleek said.
“No she does not!” Tamia retorted.
“Yes she does, I can tell…”
“What’s wrong with you? She’s moved on…”
“No she hasn’t…”
“Please! You’re so arrogant; you must think everyone likes you!”
“No, I just know some people do…”
“Why do you want to know anyway? What do you like her or something?”
“Hell, no!” Maleek exclaimed. “Have you seen her face? She’s b…”
“Don’t even bother finishing the sentence,” Tamia said, coldly. She started to walk away when Maleek held her back.
“Wait,” he said softly. Tamia looked at her arm, where he held a firm grip. At that moment when he touched her, an electric shock was passed between them. Maleek let go, in shock.
“Did you feel…?”
“Yeah, I did,” Tamia replied. They looked at each other, in silence.
“Probably static electricity, you know…” he stammered.
Tamia shrugged. “Maybe.” Then she walked away, leaving Maleek standing in the corridor alone.
He definitely liked me then, Tamia thought, drawing funny cartoons on her work. She looked down at her paper. She had drawn a tall slender woman bending down to kiss a short stubby man. She smiled to herself. I should have chosen Art for my GCSE options, she thought.
“Okay, everyone, stand up behind your seats!” the supply teacher said to the class. Tamia screwed up her paper and threw it in the bin.

Everyone stood up behind their seats. Maleek Gideon looked across the room to the girl he was in love with. He definitely never felt this was about any girl.
And she doesn’t realise how beautiful she is, he thought. He watched as Tamia threw a screwed up piece of paper in the bin gracefully. She grinned, she had a beautiful smile that showed off all of her pearl-white perfect teeth and cute dimples would appear on each of her cheeks. Oh, and those front teeth that had a gap in between them. It drove him crazy, she drove him crazy.
Tamia was very insecure about her looks. She really didn’t know how attractive she was. One morning, before school, they met at the bus stop near her house.
“You know you look peng today,” he said. Her hair was done in two thick braids, which made her look a little younger.
“So I didn’t look peng yesterday?!” she joked. Maleek rolled his eyes and brought her into his arms. “Course you did, you look peng everyday.”
Tamia raised an eyebrow. “Have you gone mad? Monday, my hair looked mad! Tuesday, I had bare bags under my eyes, yesterday, huh; don’t even get me started on that –“
Maleek brought his lips into hers, surprising Tamia quite a lot.
“Hey,” she said, pushing him away. “We’re on main road! People can see us!”
“So…let’s go behind that tree for five minutes, and, you know…” He winked and wiggled his eyebrows suggestively. Tamia burst into a fit of giggles.
That was a good five minutes, he thought, reminiscing. By now, the whole class was standing, messing about, and waiting for the bell to ring. Maleek looked around the room. He wasn’t the only one looking at Tamia; a couple of other boys were, including Wally, asked out Tamia a few months ago, around the same time her and Maleek started to go out, but she turned him down.
Maleek didn’t blame them for watching her, because she had the perfect body. She had long, slender, smooth legs, a flat, toned stomach and she was curvy in all the right places. Even when she walked down the corridor, she was constantly getting stares by boys in all years, but of course, she was completely oblivious to it.
Finally, the school bell went. The class filled out of the class room. Maleek grabbed Tamia’s arm and pulled her into an empty corridor.
“What, man?” Tamia said, rubbing her sore arm from where Maleek grabbed her so firmly.
“Did I hurt you, sorry,” he said. He looked concerned. Tamia rolled her eyes. “I’m okay, continue.”
“Okay, we need to figure out where we’re gonna meet after school,” he continued. Maleek and Tamia were going out, but they decided to keep it a secret and let no one know, except their two best friends, Shantell and Joshua, who were also going out secretly.
“I’m going to my sister’s house after school,” Tamia said slowly. “So…let’s meet at the park.”
Maleek nodded. “Okay.” Then, he suddenly grabbed her by her waist and brought her closer to him.
“What are you doing?” she gasped. “We’re at school, someone might see us!”
“Nobody’s here,” he said. He brought her even closer to her, so their bodies were touching. He could smell her perfume, a mixture of peaches and oranges, that was driving him crazy.
He groaned. “You have no idea what you’re doing to me.”
She smiled, her chocolate-brown eyes sparkling mischievously. “You have no idea what I’m about to do to you.”
She crushed her lips into his. Her lips were so soft. His tongue asked to enter her mouth, and then her mouth allowed it in. Maleek absorbed Tamia’s sweet taste and his hands roamed her beautiful body. It travelled down her back and caressed her buttocks…
“Who’s there!” they heard a teacher yell. Maleek and Tamia broke away from each other. They looked at each other before sprinting out of the corridor and out the school building without once looking back.
“Do you think he saw us,” Maleek panted.
“Nah,” Tamia said, holding a stitch at her side. They looked at each other, and then burst out laughing.
“I can’t believe we did that,” Tamia giggled.
“Neither can I,” Maleek chuckled. And with that, they both made their way to their English lesson.
