Prologue

A dying queen and her trusted young mage walked through the trees to the lake where the queen’s final resting place would be.

“Are you sure you wish to do this, Your Majesty?” the young mage asked, her blue eyes regarding her companion with concern.

“I am sure,” the queen replied firmly. “I have seen the future. I must do something to stop it.”

The mage nodded reluctantly. “I suppose. But to such an extreme, Your Majesty?”

The queen nodded. “I am afraid so, my friend. I am dying anyway. If I do this, it may save our land’s future. Of course, I shall need your help if such a deed is to be carried out. Your wisdom and guidance to the future generation shall be crucial.”

“Yes, Your Majesty,” the young mage replied obediently, feeling the weight of responsibility settling heavily upon her shoulders. “I shall help you however I can.”

The queen nodded regally and they continued their trek in tense silence. When they arrived at the queen’s resting place the queen took a final glance around, her brilliant blue eyes sparkling with memories of happier times. She shook her head, causing her silky blond braid to whip around in front of her tall, slender body. With one final glance at the lake, the queen said quietly, “Let us begin.”

The young mage nodded, her inquisitive eyes taking in every detail of the scene with apprehension and sorrow. She wasn’t sure what would happen once her queen departed from this world. The mage didn’t know if she could handle this responsibility on her own. “Your Majesty, you are aware that this place shall change once I perform the spell? It may not even look the same.”

The queen inclined her head in understanding. “Yes, but I was told that the changes would be good ones. It shall make this place seem enchanted, special. Just as I have always seen it, others will also.” She smiled softly at the thought of her sanctuary being shared with future generations.

The young mage swallowed and gestured at the pure water. “All right then, if you will.” Her queen slowly walked to the center of the chilly lake, her dress floating gracefully about her as the water grew deeper. She looked back at the mage and nodded solemnly for her to begin.

The young mage, being only a beginner herself, took another deep breath and sent a silent prayer that her spell would be successful. Her master had told her that performing such a complex spell at such a young age could have possible effects, positive and negative. These included not aging, gaining extra knowledge, or death. The possibilities were endless.

Taking out her crystals, the mage laid them in a wide circle around her and took out her amulet. As she began to chant the spell she’d memorized over the last few weeks all anxiety fell away, replaced by an extraordinary sense of spiritual awareness and well-being. The youngster noticed nothing as she chanted the incantations, slowly exploring her new state of mind as she worked the spell.

When the mage opened her eyes, her queen was gone. A large stone was jutting straight out of the clear water in the middle of the lake. The youngster stood up and gathered her things, packing them neatly into her little bag. Strangely, she felt no sadness that her queen and friend were gone. She felt only satisfaction that she had done what needed to be done, possibly saving this land in the process.

Before she left, she took a long look at the rock and, on impulse, closed her eyes and muttered a small spell. Writing sprawled across the rock’s surface in small, curling letters. She looked around her and saw the drastic change her spell had inflicted upon the forest; the trees now glowed with a faint light and the soil was mixed with glowing crystals. Glowing crystals winked up at her from the lake bottom. It lent an unearthly glow to the area, making it seem as if angels would descend at any moment to bathe in the glowing water.

The mage gave a small smile and looked back at the rock now inscribed with a prophecy that would someday save the land. “Goodbye, my friend,” she said softly to the trees around her. “I shall guard the Wood of Eternal Dreams forever.”

As she left, she thought, "Because she has loved life, she shall have no sorrow to die. The beloved queen must die, but her name shall live forever on in this land."
