Complex Numbers A complex number is expressed in the standard form a + bi, where a and b are real numbers and i is defined by i^2 = -1 (that is, i is the square root of -1). For example, 3 + 2i is a complex number. The bi term is often referred to as an imaginary number (though this may be misleading, as it is no more "imaginary" than the symbolic abstractions we know as the "real" numbers). Thus, every complex number has a real part, a, and an imaginary part, bi. Complex numbers are often represented on a graph known as the "complex plane," where the horizontal axis represents the infinity of real numbers, and the vertical axis represents the infinity of imaginary numbers. Thus, each complex number has a unique representation on the complex plane: some closer to real; others, more imaginary. If a = b, the number is equal parts real and imaginary. Very simple transformations applied to numbers in the complex plane can lead to fractal structures of enormous intricacy and astonishing beauty. |
Okay, so, look. When I got my second Covfefe shot on Thursday, the nurse or tech or whateverthefuck, the chick with the needle, advised me to "drink plenty of fluids." Beer is, in fact, a fluid. So it's a good thing that this article came up in my random selection rather than, say, something deep about philosophy, science, or philosophy of science. Or even music. Just to be clear, here, this is an infographic that shades each state in the US based on which state the people in it hate the most. There's really not much for me to add. It's just that the more you look at it, the funnier it gets. Like, for instance: exactly how many states hate California. Or that my own state is the only one that hates West Virginia, while both West Virginia and Maryland return the favor. There are some exclusive mutual hatreds going on, but for maximum lulz, just look at New Jersey. But my absolute, all-time favorite is Florida. Seriously, just go there and look at the graphic. I'mma go pass out again. |
