Friends
23. Tell us about your childhood friends.

My childhood is such a long time ago. However of course there are memories of friends from then. But they were in another country and in another world from the one we live in today.
I’ve always preferred being part of a couple of friends rather than part of a group or crowd.
This is great whilst your friend remains your friend, but falling out can be devastating.
So of course this happened to me often throughout childhood.
I went back home to the UK after fifty years of living away in another country and decided to look up my best friend at school. It was relatively easy to find her after a bit of detective work. She still lived in the same town. I’d remembered her brother’s name. He was in the phone book. He told me my friend’s married name and I simply gave her a call.
We hadn’t seen each other since we were sixteen. She asked me around for a cup of tea and we carried on from where we left off. We are both grandmothers now. So some friendships can last the test of time even without nurturing them it seems.
