The Escape

The sun creeps up
shining through every
drop of dew
each one a shimmering diamond
adorning its own blade of grass

It warms the soil, sending forth
an earthy perfume

A nose twitches
the burrow dweller emerges
enticed by the heady aroma
of tender greens burgeoning
from the moist carpet

An ear twitches at the sound of danger
All movement ceases at the warning
The rabbit remains frozen
camouflaged by design
and the hawk will fly off
still hungry
for now
