Dog Thoughts
Dog Thoughts
So he throws the stick in the water,
“Go fetch,” he says and points,
so I go fetch,
swimming as though I enjoy it,
paddling after a stupid stick
that he threw in the water
and when I return with it,
he’ll throw it back in the water.
I’m so glad I’m a dog.
And so it goes,
man and his best friend,
happy in each other’s company
but mainly because the dog is loyal,
trusting, obedient and devoted
to his master.
Instinct drives him to know his place
and, once found, he’ll never complain,
content with his status at home.
Instinct moves him to love his humans,
to protect them whatever the threat,
control his urges within the house
and submit to teasing by little ones.
Instinct it is that gives him patience
through good treatment and bad,
desertion, abandonment and cruelty,
always adoring, ever compliant,
the perfect companion to man.
Maybe, with a little more instinct,
mankind might the better be
and we’d all just get along.
But no, that’s ridiculous.
