Between Us
In your eyes I see
the door behind which
you lock away

long afternoons in tall grass
your hand behind my head
as we lie together in silent
understanding

you tease me with your radiance
it warms me and
hums like a thousand wings
beating in my chest
those long afternoons
caught in your arms

drawn to your door, that
portal to your soul you keep
a gated fortress

if I were a flame, perhaps
I could burn through to you
even the mighty oak falls
to fire, but you wash away
my anger with the blue
of your gaze and the flow
of my tears

lying in the tall grass
holding my breath,
because you take even my words
to fortify your defenses

I have written my love
an unwelcome graffiti on your walls
Pinned it to your door
but no promises entreat you

in your eyes always
there’s the shadow
of the door between us
