The Star by Jane and Ann Taylor. Everybody knows the first verse of this poem. I hadn't realized it was part of a larger piece. I thought is was simply a nursery rhyme. I was also pleased to see it is written by two women, most likely sisters. I find that little fact impressive.

Reading the whole poem I get a sense of this little star being so much more. It is able to help a trav'ller find his way in the dark... with only a tiny spark. That idea makes me remember that all of us are capable of using our light, our spark, to add to the whole around us. We shine where we are. We use our gifts to serve others.

Jane Taylor (1783 - 1824)
and Ann Taylor (1784 - 1866)

Twinkle, twinkle little star,
How I wonder what you are!
Up above the world so high,
Like a diamond in the sky.

When the blazing sun is gone,
When he nothing shines upon,
Then you show your little light,
Twinkle, twinkle, all the night.

Then the trav'ller in the dark
Thanks you for your tiny spark,
He could not see which way to go,
If you did not twinkle so.

In the dark blue sky you keep,
Often thro' my curtains peep,
For you never shut your eye,
Till the sun is in the sky.

'Tis your bright and tiny spark,
Lights the trav'ller in the dark,
Tho' I know not what you are,
Twinkle, twinkle, little star.
