The Summer Has Passed

The summer has passed,
the triple digit temperatures
have descended into double digits
and are moving toward single digits.

We have turned off the cool air,
opened the front door
during the daylight hours,
and the windows at night.

Cool breezes caress
the boughs of pine
and the fauns of palm,
whisper promises
of pleasant weather
to pigeons and sparrows.

The summer has passed,
and with it the deadly heat;
the winter has not yet arrived
with its blood freezing cold.
