Voices on the Phone Discussion The Art of Free Verse
Voices on the Phone

A shaky voice on the other end of the phone
identified himself,
but I already knew from caller ID
who I was talking to.
With a smile
I hoped transmitted through the line,
I asked how he was
though I could tell from his tenor
he was having a bad day.
His response was an upbeat, "I'm OK,"
followed by a long monologue
on why he wasn't,
which included a health set back,
a fight with his landlord/brother,
and his car engine blowing up.
"But who cares?"

My quick response, "I do,"
and he started to cry.

After allowing
him to get himself together
I offered to transfer his car to an old truck
with minimal effort to him,
he thanked me for my friendship
and hung up.
