About This Newsletter

Once upon a time
My mother read to me
A Grimm Fairy Tale

Letter From the Editor

Do you read to your children, grandchildren, nieces, or nephews? If you don't, I encourage you to begin reading short stories and folklore. One of the fondest memories of my childhood, was my mother reading to me. Mom read the German folklore tales preserved by Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm. I say preserved, because they never wrote any of the stories themselves. They collected and wrote down German folktales that had been told and retold over the centuries.

Someone, either my parents or grandparents, purchased a set of books that contained the complete tales of the Brothers Grimm. If I remember correctly, there were also a few American folktales in those books. Mom would read stories from those books to me. After I learned to read, I read the stories myself because I thought they were exciting, and I could visualize (when pictures weren't present) the characters and action in the story I was reading.

I remember reading or having read to me Snow White, Rapunzel, Beauty and the Beast, and Rumpelstiltskin. There is one story I remember, that I can't put a title to. It was about a princess who lived in a castle with her brothers. One evening, for some reason, the princess (whose name I don't remember) decided to run counterclockwise around the family castle at sunset. She ran around the castle multiple times, and found herself in another world. She encountered numerous evil characters and was eventually rescued by one of her brothers or another prince.

I encourage you to read or tell folklore to your children. If you know folktales from your culture that hasn't been written down yet, write them down. Folktales are part of humanity's cultural heritage and should be remembered. Many folktales have morals or lessons that helped our ancestors get along with each other and survive.

What are some of the folktales of your culture or family that you would like to preserve? The deadline for the June fantasy newsletter is June 10.

Excerpt: My name is Jared. I recall the day when I first went there- that place so unlike yours and mine. It was dazzling. And I wish I could have stayed there but alas it was not to be. I will begin when I first heard of it from a close friend of mine named Walt. I remember passing by Walt in his cubicle at work. “Hey dude!” Walt said. “I found something totally intriguing at mystery.com.”
