birdsong
in the park,
I hear them singing
familiar, complex calls
         and answers:

here I am!
         I see you!
I'm strong
and know where to find
good food—nest with me!

I hear in them
young people I used to watch:
look at me!
         you're so beautiful!
I'll show
you a good time—come to me!

always watching.
I never heard a song
meant to call me.

but I do know the song
which means:
watch out!
she writes.

line count: 22

I thought of different ways this prompt could go--cages and zoos and birds with less than melodeous voices, but when I started writing, my thought process started with the final stanza, and then I tried to follow my process backwards to see how I got there.
