‘Alá’, The Month of Fasting The First Day of Fast The slow hours march In mute procession: Each second becomes a minute, Each minute an hour, Each hour a day, Each day a year. The Second Day of Fast The preparation has begun! The eart of the soul Is plowed By desire of the flesh. The body wants That which is death to the soul. The horseman, must control the horse Else both die in the fall. The Third Day of Fast Prayer awakens The longing to obey God's commands, Hunger awakens The desire for His Holy Words. Thirst awakens The need for the wind of Divine love. The Fourth Day of Fast Thirsty I drink from the Fountain of God The golden Elixir of Immortality. Hungry I pick from the Tree of Life The ruby Apples of God's Glory. The Fifth Day of Fast Obedience Generates The courage to speak. The courage To intone The cause of the Beloved. The Sixth Day of Fast Obedience Strengthens the will, Generates The desire To overcome ego, And to do God's will. The Seventh Day of Fast Ego's focus Is always upon self. Ego's goal Is to maintain the status quo. Soul's focus Is upon the Blessed Beauty. Soul's goal Is to overcome ego. The Eighth Day of Fast Transformation occurs In phases Over time! Each day A step toward perfection Is taken. The Soul blooms As the earth of the Ego Is weeded. The Ninth Day of Fast The animal self-- The ego-- Doesn't know Reality! It believes Only what it sees. The Tenth Day of Fast The fight With self Is a never ending battle! Ego's Allies Fear, weariness, and the Evil Whisperer. The Eleventh Day of Fast Abstain From that which is abhorrent To God. Eschew That which is contrary To God's law. The Twelfth Day of Fast The reward of obedience Is self-discipline. The reward of self-discipline Is self-knowledge. The Thirteenth Day of Fast The soul's Facets are formed through Steadfastness In obedience to God's law, Firmness In the Covenant of the Lord, And meditation Upon God's holy word. The Fourteenth Day of Fast Tests Smooth the rough edges Off the soul Transforming Us into fine gems Reflecting the Divine Word. The Fifteenth Day of Fast To experience The state of the Beloved We fast. We fast For the love of God, And the love of the Glory of God. The Sixteenth Day of Fast The blessing Of these days are Unnumbered. The spiritual outpouring Is Great; Beyond our understanding. The Seventeenth Day of Fast Little victories In the battle with self gives The Soul assurance. Complete victory Over self is possible Through constant effort.
