30 Day Blogging Challenge: The Persona
How is your online persona different from your real world persona? How much attention do you pay to your personal privacy when communicating with others online?

I believe my online persona is the same as my real world persona, although I imagine some of my natural warmth gets lost in translation due to the medium online. In person, someone can see my concern, hear my emphasis, and all the parts of my verbal communication whereas online it's left to the reader to understand it. My word choices certainly help that but there's no replacement for seeing me smile as I say something, or watching me gesture with my hands due to my excitement.

I really wish I could record a video of my reviews instead of typing them, or at least have a video to go along with it so that the author could see and feel my reaction to their piece. Maybe through Discord I could do that if we ever get to that point. If anyone ever wanted to hear my review instead of just read it, I'd be happy to do a recording of it. Or a skype call. Or Facebook. There's tools out there for one on one conversations but we don't really use them on WDC and that's a shame to me. I would love to deepen some of my relationships on WDC but I'm not sure how.

As for my persona, if you want to call it that, I've developed it over 20 years to be as authentic as I'm capable of. I have learned to truly care about others and to want to help them, as much as I can. That's part of what makes WDC perfect for me. When I first started I was very green but ten years has brought about a lot of good changes in me, making my persona even better. I try to live up to my name, which means love. After all, we could all benefit from a little more love, right?

As for the privacy thing, if you're close enough to me to know my full real name, you'll get my phone number. If you're persistent, you'll be able to find my email address. You'll know what city I'm in. If you do a background check you could probably find my address. But I've found I'm too boring for anyone to pursue with hacking. And I have a 9 mm handgun. I live in Texas. I'm a good shot. So's my husband. I have a 65 pound chow retriever who sounds like a Rottweiler when he barks and he will not hesitate to mess someone up if they show up on our doorstep uninvited. My husband is 6'2 and 280 pounds. He's as intimidating as a linebacker and twice as mean if called for. We both have PTSD and will wake from a mouse fart. We're not a family to be trifled with. I'm not too worried, just justifiably paranoid since I was kidnapped and raped for two weeks at knife point. Thankfully, in over a decade we've never had an issue and live pretty quiet lives in a city just big enough to give us comfortable anonymity without all the traffic issues.

I've had my bank account compromised about six times in the last few years, so much so that all our money sits in a secure savings account without a debit card to access it. I transfer funds to accounts as I need to. Once you've had $3,000 stolen two days before Thanksgiving, you'll never trust your debit card again, I promise.

Privacy? Meh, I've got nothing to hide. NSA, eat your heart out. It'll give you a good nap at the very least.
