On top of Old Sweetgum [175.235]
On top of Old Sweetgum

So warm at the top. Not cold where others shivered in shadows. Sugar beamed, happy to be above all their drama, spreading her five fingers as if... as if... this was all there was. But she had heard rumors. Those-in-the-know grumbled that change was in each breeze as day shortened and nights grew frosty for those not held aloft. Still, it was warm today and Sugar preferred to bask in the moment. She could see the sluggish river below her, trees that couldn't reach her heights. They were tinged in a ghastly jaundiced hue. She squinted towards mountains topped in sickly pale hues she'd only seen on bare bones. Was this what Roots had warned; was this a forewarning of change to come.

123 words, prompt was "leaf" so I narrowed that to "a day/hour in the life of a leaf"

IMHO... seems more prosaic than poetic.
