I look for you at night
when the full moon shines
through my window,
turning the world
shades of silver-blue
and shadows dance
brushing my skin like
butterfly wings.
I turn to my mirror,
hoping to meet your gaze,
but all I see is skin
turned pale and shallow
by the dark. I peel an
apple with one long,
smooth stroke of the knife
and throw the peel
over my left shoulder,
but your name hides from me.
I light candles and
listen for the whisper
of you on the wind, but
all I hear is my heart beat,
slow and steady,
and loud enough that all
of me beats with it,
and I want to believe
that you are alive somewhere
in the world, looking for me,
your heart beating
across the world—the match
to mine.
