Consoling Tones
Even this late, you hear
the seething time, stepping out of sequence
chiming in spheres and you think
it’s your cell phone, and let it answer itself,
but no, for sounds gather in crescendo,
as a celestial tune pours into your sensitive ears
sending gentle solace for things you couldn’t do.
Even this late, in sweet yearning, you listen
to its consoling tones winding up promises
to prepare you for tomorrow’s silence.
Even this late it happens:
the coming of love, the coming of light.
You wake and the candles are lit as if by themselves,
stars gather, dreams pour into your pillows,
sending up warm bouquets of air.
Even this late the bones of the body shine
and tomorrow’s dust flares into breath."
