Poet's Note: ▼ The "Blogging Circle of Friends " prompt for DAY 1974 "The meditative state of mind a poem induces can be a rehumanizing force, an antidote to the din of daily life. More than anything, I'm looking for the kind of silence that yields clarity." Tracy K.Smith America's Poet Laureate Do you agree with her analogy of poetry? Can it apply to writing in general or does it better serve its purpose in the brevity of a poem? Meditation works in any type of writing because it clears the mind of the mental noise and static that is common to the thought process. Meditation helps focus the mind on one thing, which allows an author to write clearer prose or poetry. I know that I write better poetry and prose when I pray and meditate, because it helps me focus on a specific subject. Scripture reading before meditating also helps, but if one is not religious or spiritual then reading a book of positive quotes or reciting positive affirmations helps focus. The important thing in composing poetry or writing a story is focus. The problem is that the mind tends to wander over numerous topics that have nothing to do with the subject, theme, or characters in the prose or poetry. This is where meditation comes in because it helps the mind focus, and teaches it to ignore extraneous thoughts that wander into and out of a person's mind at random intervals. A few minutes of meditation, especially at night before going to sleep, strengthens the mind and encourages positive focus. |
