An Attitude of Gratitude

In the chilly morning breeze
birds intone their gratitude
for their survival.

Sparrows
they sing their thanksgiving
to the morning sun.

I inhale the perfume of dawn,
sip black coffee
from a steaming mug,
while nibbling
a small chocolate cupcake.

My attitude is gratitude,
I whisper a prayer of thanksgiving
as I snatch
a quiet moment
before the beginning
of a hectic day.

Mine is the blessing
of living in a nation
where I can practice
my chosen faith
without government interference.

I watch politicians posture,
I intone a prayer of salvation
for their souls,
and a prayer of unity
for the planet.

I ask:
"How can I model
an attitude is gratitude,
when

with humanity
